Synopsis: Two Goth misfits trapped in the tedium of
rural Scotland – 20-something photo-mart clerk and would-be singer Gypsy (Sara
Rue) and androgynous teenage virgin Clive (Kett Turton) – hit the road in a ’79
Trans Am heading for Edinburgh, where Gypsy hopes to participate in a “Night of
a Thousand Stevies” honoring her idol, Stevie Nicks. En route, the pair
encounter a washed-up, alcoholic chanteuse (Karen Black, who sings a breathy
version of “When Sunny Gets Blue”), a handsome gay runaway (Anson Scoville), and
a van filled with randy college boys. Gypsy succumbs to a passionate but
disillusioning roadside romance, and Clive experiences a gay sexual awakening
that excites but subsequently unnerves him. Arriving in New York at a club
overflowing with faux Stevies, Gypsy learns the fate of her runaway mother and
Clive realizes that he’s not ready to deal with the challenges of a larger, more
threatening world than befoe. Written and directed by E Mann. Blond Junkies, a
comedy-drama filled with unexpected moods and eccentric characters, offers a
fresh spin on the road movie.
Born in Australia, E Mann shot numerous Super-8 or 8mm short films as a child. Emigrating to Scotland as a teenager, she got involved in videoproduction before switching to film, raising the money to shoot her first feature Blond Junkies.
